Self-Evaluation of the 2001 NMUN Experience

Brooke Olster
First year member
Habitat: Istanbul +5

In comparison with other 3-credit courses, how much effort did the NMUN participation require of you?

Compared to other 3-credit courses that I have taken, I believe MUN has required the most effort and preparation, but in a different way. For other courses, I usually study for tests and quizzes and write research papers, while in Model UN, the work I put into it has been very different, but time-wise, it had definitely been more hours and a greater effort on my part.
What academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN?
Academically, the benefits are seen right away. The most obvious and important thing I have gotten out of MUN is public speaking skills. I have seen a tremendous improvement in my abilities to go up in front of a crowd and speak about anything. I have learned how to handle my nervousness and present myself better than before. I have observed this over and over again, whether it be the progress I have made from MUN speeches, or speaking in other classes, or taking on leadership positions in other campus organizations. Besides that, I have learned a great deal about world politics; including strategies, caucusing, etc.
What non-academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN? If you are a second-year member, what did you learn this year that you did not learn last year?
Non-academically, I have also gained a great deal from Model UN. I have learned the importance of working as a team, better interpersonal and communication skills, and time management skills as well. These are all crucial qualities that I have taken away from my MUN experience that I can and will continue to recall upon forever.
Overall evaluation of the 2001 NMUN experience
I cannot say enough great things about my Model UN experience and am sure I never will be able to express my sincere gratitude to the team for all of their support in sharing with me their knowledge and friendship. I came into the "course" not knowing a single person, and came out with a new family of friends that have influenced my life in so many ways.

Model UN provides an experience unique from every other course offered at Rider. I have never seen improvements so obvious from any other class or club to this day. In just a few months, I learned to deal with my innate nervousness with public speaking, sharpened my political and research skills, and heightened my interpersonal skills.

Now, I am well equipped to take on leadership roles, analyze difficult world situations and find some means of resolving them, by compromising with other’s wants and needs. These are valuable qualities that are necessary for a successful future in any field and I genuinely feel fortunate to have been a part of such a special organization that offers that best growing opportunity available.
