Self-Evaluation of the 2001 NMUN Experience

Blair Charles Saxman
General Assembly First Committee
First year member

In comparison with other 3-credit courses, how much effort did the NMUN participation require of you?
Same amount of effort overall. It’s a lot of work during the semester, but not having a final evens things out in the end.

What academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN?  If you are a second?year member, what did you learn this year that you did not learn last year?

Academic benefits would include a thorough understanding of the workings of the UN, as well as the geo-political position of New Zealand itself.

What non-academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN?  If you are a second?year member, what did you learn this year that you did not learn last year?

Other non-academic benefits would include refining my ability to speak to and within groups, networking and making new friends (at the MUN in New York City as well as within the team), and best of all just being in the UN building – what a thrill!

Overall evaluation of the 2001 NMUN experience

I expected to enjoy myself as well as to learn a few new things when I joined Model UN. What I didn’t expect was how much I would enjoy it, and the full extent of the knowledge I would gain from the experience. That said, if you’re doing this for the first time, the classroom activities we engage in all semester – while necessary – just can’t fully prepare you for the rigors to be faced in NYC. But that’s part of what you learn; to do well you’ve got to be willing to put in the work.

Not that it’s all hardship and sweat. To the contrary, the experience of getting to know so many new people from all over the world, debating important issues and (hopefully) bringing people together in solving them, plus getting to spend some great times in the UN and NYC – it all adds so much that it’s hard to quantify.

In short, I would say that Model UN is worth every drop of sweat and possible disappointment (if you don’t win anything). As far as the list of ‘Things Worth Doing as an Undergrad’ goes – especially if you have any future professional aspirations – MUN is literally off the charts.
