Self-Evaluation of the 2001 NMUN Experience

Andy Wong
Second year member
Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organization

In comparison with other 3-credit courses, how much effort did the NMUN participation require of you?

I worked a great deal more in this course than any other this semester. MUN was one of my topic academic priorities.
Do you think that NMUN credits ought to be limited to a maximum of 2 years of participation?
I do not think NMUN should be limited. If the teams really want to win an award we need to allow more experience on the team. I saw many teams have third, fourth year members, graduate students, and allow experience member not have to take a class. I am not suggesting we go as far as some schools do and understand the importance providing opportunities for younger members are involved in the experience. I understand that budgets are limited also.

One solution is to allow experienced members to be on the team and stipulate that they pay their own way. I personally would have found the funds to go to NY, because I know how valuable the experience is. Also by not taking the class it would of free up funds I could of use for NY. This would allow more experience team members on the team, improving the quality of the team while still allowing other students to participate. Having more experienced members working with new members would only be a plus. Increasing the size of the team while improving the quality is a tremendous benefit, both for the individuals and the team.

If participated as this experience as a club, I could of use the money for NY. I personally would have contributed the same amount of effort because I realize the more I put in the more I gain. A few members from last year, including Ryan, Natasha, and Jackie may have participated if they didn’t have to take the class. They would have freed up their extra-curricular obligations in order to make time for MUN. I realize the effort and dedication is a little less with this not being a class, but I saw that many schools had successfully implemented this method.

What academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN? If you are a second-year member, what did you learn this year that you did not learn last year?
Improving research and critical thinking skills are strong academic benefits I gained. The ability to do an extensive amount of research and apply it is very crucial and beneficial. I understand exactly what type of research I needed for the team, and efficiently acquired the data.
What non-academic benefits did you derive from participating in the 2001 NMUN? If you are a second-year member, what did you learn this year that you did not learn last year?
As a second year member I was able to improve on my politicking skills. I understood the needs of many other delegates, and then sought to appropriately gain their support.
Overall evaluation of the 2001 NMUN experience
This has been an amazing and unique opportunity. I am very involved on campus and had a great deal of internship experience, but none have come close to the MUN experience. This has been one of my best decisions at Rider, which has provided me with skills, and experiences that I will continually use. Some of my fondest memories will be of the program and of the team members in the program.
