My full name is Brooke Elizabeth Olster and I am a freshman at Rider
University. I am 18 years old and I am a Business Economics major with
a concentration in International Business. I am excited to learn more about
the Model UN and become a member as I greatly enjoy understanding global
and current issues. I am sure that I would become a better team player,
communicator, and more knowledgeable person as a result of participating
on this unique team, while meeting many new and interesting people. I consider
myself to be an incredibly open-minded, enthusiastic and dedicated person,
always seeking new ventures and challenges and usually excelling at them.
Even though I have never been a part of any sort of Model UN type of organization,
I have always been active in school and community clubs and projects. I
have an extensive background in community service at my High School; such
as assisting lower functioning classes and those with mild to severe emotional
and physical ailments. In High School, I was also an active member of the
French Club, Key club, Blood Drive Committee, along with many others throughought
my four years there. So far at Rider, I have attended meetings and plan
on becoming a member of Circle K, French Club, Hillel, Delta Sigma Pi,
DECA, Law Society, and Forum for Economic Students.
I was born in Philadelphia, but shortly moved to Chester, NJ with my
family, consisting of my parents and two brothers, both with Cerebral Palsy
and Mental Retardation. We later moved to Short Hills, NJ, where most of
my childhood growth took place. I attended a private, all-girls school,
called Kent Place, until fifth grade, where my family moved once again!
This time it was to Upstate New York, in an infamous town called Woodstock,
where I attended a small, laid-back, private school until eighth grade.
In this time, my mother, brothers and I moved to the next town over, Saugerties,
where I attended a middle-sized, public school for my whole high school
career. Thus, I have been exposed to several new situations in which case
I was forced to adapt. I feel like I have benefited from encountering people
from many "walks-of-life," as most people my age have not. It allows me
to look at things more objectively and draw from past experiences. Instead
of just having the same group of friends from childhood, I have peers from
all over that I cherish and will always keep in touch with.
One of my favorite activities includes traveling. I seek great satisfaction
from visiting unknown places and adjusting to different cultures. I love
learning new languages, trying new foods, etcetera, as it broadens my horizons
and increases my interest in world cultures. The past two summers have
been amazing in that sense. The summer after my junior year of high school,
I studied abroad at the American University of Paris. For six weeks I almost
became fluent in French, made international friends, and realized my newfound
independence. Needless to say, I did not wish to come home at the end of
the summer! This past summer, I participated in a finance internship at
Barclays Bank of London. For another six weeks I enjoyed and learned from
living abroad, only this time, while working! I interned in the international
section at Barclays, observing and eventually taking on important tasks
such as opening and closing foreign accounts, calculating daily exchange
rates and working with our trade department. I look forward to studying
abroad during my college years, hopefully back at the American University
of Paris. |
